Sayori
Dan wanted the "heavy hitting stuff with Sayori" to come before you hang out with Natsuki or Yuri for the weekend so that it'd be in the back of your mind the whole time.
After Dan wrote Sayori's confession scene, he worried it was too "out of left field" so he went back and added more hints at Sayori's depression.
"In a lot of dating sims, the protagonist always knows exactly what to say in order to make [characters] feel better. They just magically say the right thing and things are better magically, but this is a scenario where, if [Sayori]'s really suffering from depression then he can't just say or do anything that makes it better. She's in a situation that she can at most be comforted in certain ways, but when the protagonist is responding to her, he is visibly at least a little bit frustrated because he doesn't fully understand her feelings and doesn't fully understand what he can say or do to make it better. Like he's saying 'I can be here for you and give you my support, but I don't understand how that's not enough.'... For someone like him who doesn't really understand how she's feeling it would be like so difficult to figure out the right thing to say."
(Moral: MC is dense but trying his best.)
"It was really really interesting to take the tropes that this character often has, like waking up late or caring so much about other people being happy, and like giving it that layer... Like adding that little more depth behind a character that makes you actually care about them."
"The protagonist wants to be there for her, but she is literally not letting him. Like if that's what it means to be someone's close friend, to be there for them, and she's literally shutting him off and not letting him share that part of her life or share the burden... it feels like you're not being trusted. That's probably what the protagonist is feeling" (on the "betrayed as a close friend" line)
"It's not until you join the club and start making friends with the other girls that she realizes that she has feelings for you." (also) "She probably hates the fact that she has feelings for you," (because of the situation it puts her in).
There was almost a CG of MC and Sayori hugging in her confession scene, but Dan decided to save it for if you accepted her confession.
"Maybe if Sayori hadn't shown up [after you spend time with the other girl (Yuri in this case)] you would have the option to push her away like 'I've already got my waifu, you can't seduce me with that sweater or that... luscious purple hair.'" I think he likes Yuri.
On the chat trying to make Dan make a poll for whether or not to accept Sayori's confession: "And no, you don't get to make the choice, of course I'm going to accept her confession. We went for Sayori this whole time and also the other scene is just way to painful I'm not going through that. Like I felt so incredibly sad while writing that scene where you turn down her confession like why am I letting people do this it's so sad." (in short, Dan is still emotionally effected by DDLC and wants Sayori to be happy.)
"Even if you say that you love her, I want it to not feel too right."
"The point at which you make this decision, Monika probably wants to push Sayori to her limits here, and Monika is probably not letting her be happy."
"She's like desperately hoping that the protagonist is able to help her, but of course he's not because that's the point of this game. The point is that this is not a 1-dimentional tropy dating sim it's like a real thing that this person is experiencing and it's going to work in a much more real way where you can't just magically make a choice and fix their problems and give them a happy ending."
On the day of the festival: "It was very intentional to not have music through this whole sequence because it makes it feel weirdly creepy before it actually gets creepy."
On the rush to Sayori's house on festival day: "It was interesting seeing people going into this scene and expecting different things. A lot of them knew early on what was going to happen and other people just thought that the game was trying to scare you but 'oh this type of game would never do that' and so they didn't think it would actually happen."
On the "Sayo-nara" scene: "I spent quite a long time designing this scene, like the various effects and how it syncs with the music. I didn't know what sort of effect it would have on people. Something I was constantly afraid of when making this game was that it was not creepy enough or not disturbing enough since I didn't have the same perspective since I was the one making the game I didn't know if the effect would be there." (good grief Dan "not disturbing enough"?)
"This is the very first instance where the game does something without you clicking to advance. That's the first rule that the game decides to break. Things can happen when you don't click for them to happen."
Dan uses his developer hax to gently close the door. (not even joking. He did it twice so we got to gently open the door 3 times. Big oof.)
"There was a time when I was working on this animation [Sayo-nara] in an airport and I had to keep looking over my shoulder to make sure no one was like seeing this horrible imagery of a character committing suicide over and over."
"That's another rule that's broken here, all of a sudden there's movement and animation and the whole screen is doing stuff."
Sayori being glitched on the title screen originally didn't happen until the end the first day of act 2.
Originally in the released version of the game, if you tried to quit the game in the Sayo-nara scene the "do you want to quit" dialogue box would be all messed up, but Dan decided that it was too cruel and changed it back to normal in a patch. If someone is trying to quit the game during that scene, it's probably because it's too much for them and Dan thought it would be unfair to them to not let them get out if they need to.
